Ed Cowan is one of the newest members of the Australian cricket team, having played just seven Tests in his very young career.

A move to Tasmania in the 2009 season worked wonders for the patient left-handed opening batsman, who has scored consistent runs for his state ever since.

957 runs at an average of 53.16 was the perfect start to his Tasmanian career and kick-started his ascension to the role of Australian opener.

Four centuries in as many tests sent a strong message to Australian selectors before the home series against India, and it was this undeniable form that earned him his Baggy Green.

It was a reasonable debut series for Cowan, who scored 206 at an average of just over 34.

Three half centuries in his seven Tests could work against the left-hander, who needs a big score early on against South Africa to cement his spot in the side.

A tough start to the Bupa Sheffield Shield won’t help his cause, with the Tasmanian failing to pass 50 in his seven at bats.

The likeable batsman will be hoping for favourable conditions in Brisbane for the start of the series. A talented player at state level, Cowan just needs that one big innings to spark what could possibly be a very bright Test career.
